Fantastic Start, But There Is More to Come
Winning Sunday was a great game for the team and for me, personally. We started kind of slow because the Jets tried a lot of shifting and putting men in motion to try to confuse us, but we got our act together on defense and the offense played a great game from start to finish.
Going into the season as a starter, I want to take advantage of my opportunity. I think I had 2 1/2 sacks -- that is what the team gave me -- and it was good to be out there so much. It was the kind of start I wanted, even though I know I can improve as far as technique and doing the little things.
We're taking the approach that we can build off the first game. We accomplished one win, and we know that playing Sunday night against San Diego is going to present another challenge.
Being a starter is something I'm used to now. It helps to know the game plan and to have time to set up the guy I'm going against. I get a chance to learn about the linemen and the scheme the offense is trying to put together.
We reacted as a team the way I thought we would. I know there has been a lot of hype, but we're just going out there working hard and knowing we have to play well to win in this league. We prepare the right way and we do the things that Coach Belichick wants us to do.
You prepare for the regular season in the preseason and you prepare for that in the off-season. I knew we took the right approach -- stayed humble and worked hard. We have to keep it going.
I didn't spend much time on Sunday watching the offense. I caught myself doing that last year and it didn't help my game at all. I'm on the bench getting ready for the next series. I saw the touchdown Randy Moss had against three defenders and that was nice, but I want to concentrate on my job even when I'm off the field.
San Diego is a big game. We have to be ready for them. The Chargers have a great defensive team and they have a lot of weapons on offense. It is going to be physical. We have to play better than we did against the Jets to win this game. I am looking forward to a great Sunday night game.
